A San Diegan since 1981, I have been medical and health policy writer, and spent most of my 27.5 years on that beat with the San Diego Union-Tribune. For about nine of those years, from about 1984 to 1993, I covered HIV/AIDS.

But I've always loved to sew and create, which helped relieve heavy deadline pressures of daily journalism. I sew these cozies and other items on a Janome embroidery machine, which is constantly teaching me new tricks and skill.
